Habits, or behavior patterns, can be a two edged sword. Shaking hands or putting on our shoes before we leave the house are useful behavior patterns. It saves a lot of time and effort to leave those activities on autopilot. Unfortunately, many of us learn to eat on autopilot in ways that are both fattening and ultimately unsatisfying.
For example, some people eat ice cream when they need to calm down. Chances are they learned that pattern from well-meaning adults when they were children. If little five year old Suzy’s upset, give her an ice cream. She’ll feel better.
Later, adult Suzy may well use ice cream as a way of coping with stress long after she’s grown up. She may consciously realize that the ice cream is making her fatter which, in and of itself, is stressful. However, she may feel unable to control her habit. After all, ice cream tastes good, and in the moment that she decided to eat it, it was a happy thought.
Hypnosis can be used to give Suzy some powerful new strategies for handling stress. And, once she has those new behavior patterns in place, sitting on the couch with a pint of Rocky Road at the end of the stressful day will be a thing of the past.
Feeling a compulsion to clean ones plate is another common fattening habit pattern. There are some very simple hypnotic techniques to help someone eliminate that habit. Then if there’s too much food on their plate they can eat what they like and comfortably leave the rest. Sometimes a lifetime habit of guilty feelings about clean plates and disappear for good in just a few minutes.
It simply possible to develop new useful habit patterns around eating and food using hypnosis. The new autopilot behaviors that are created are all designed to be legal moral and nonfattening, of course, and they will prove to be way more satisfying in the long run as well.
