When I first spoke to her, my client told me that she was having trouble getting over a breakup. It had been a year, and she was still crying over him. He had cheated on her, and then he dumped her. To make it even worse, he was still calling her, wanting to be friends, and that made it even more difficult for her to let him go.
One way of thinking about her situation is that her thoughts about that man triggered the painful emotions and memories. The sound of his voice, and his still wanting to be friends reminded her of all their happy memories which had been lost.
I used conversational hypnosis with her because she had a particularly good sense of humor, which I used to help her change the feelings associated with the thoughts of her ex-boyfriend.
I got are laughing and then mentioned that the boyfriend had cheated on her. And before she had a chance to bring up the pain and start crying I said something else funny. And, over the course of an hour she created a new set of feelings and thoughts about the breakup and the cheating. I knew that I had been successful with her because when she left that day I asked her to stop, she turned around and looked at me. I mentioned that the ex-boyfriend had cheated on her and then left her, she started laughing uncontrollably.
