Many smokers are afraid to stop because they fear that they will gain weight. Smokers who gained weight after stopping once before are even more concerned and those who are stopping for the first time. And, all that fear is unnecessary.
Using hypnosis to stop smoking can eliminate weight gain afterwards. And, that is because most of the weight gain that people experience after stopping smoking is because they substitute eating for the tobacco habit.
Smoking is commonly associated with stress reduction. There is research that shows that smoking actually causes more stress and anxiety, and that people who stop smoking experience less anxiety and depression. However, if someone believes that smoking helps them deal with stress the idea eliminating their smoking habit can be stressful and in and of itself. Unfortunately, many of them turn to eating as a response to the stress of kicking the habit by willpower.
Hypnosis can give people ways of coping with stress that are superior to eating or smoking. That is why hypnotherapy is over 10 times as successful as willpower in helping people stop smoking for good.
Some of the ways hypnosis help people become more resourceful during stressful times include strengthening self-confidence, and teaching them to respond to stressful situations by becoming calmer and more optimistic about their ability to successfully respond to the situation.
As a hypnotherapist, I tell my stop smoking clients that if they gain weight after they stop smoking, their lifetime stop smoking program is not finished yet. Weight gain is simply a signal from the client’s unconscious mind that there are a few concerns that still need to be addressed. Client may just need a few more ways of dealing with stress, or of accomplishing other positive intentions of smoking.
It may seem odd to think of an unhealthy habit like smoking is having positive intentions. However, my clients frequently tell me of benefits that they experience from smoking, many of which have nothing to do with nicotine. For example, some of my clients will tell me that when they need a few moments to themselves they will go smoke. They could just walk outside or some place to be alone as non-smokers. They just made an association between the alone time and the smoking, and thought if they didn’t smoke they couldn’t take that time for themselves. Obviously, that’s not about nicotine.
Typically my clients find that food taste better once they’ve stop smoking. That might seem like it would lead to weight gain, but because food actually becomes more satisfying, it’s easier for them to eat a little less.
Once someone who stopped smoking before and gained weight afterwards realizes that there is a way for them to stop smoking without gaining any weight they are more motivated to become non-smokers.
