Fear of vomiting is called emetophobia, and my client had a rather odd form of it. She was so afraid that people around her would vomit that she couldn’t take a ride in an elevator, or eat a meal in a restaurant with her husband.
Hypnosis and neurolinguistic programming (NLP) offer a great deal of relief to people with fears and phobias. They tend to work more quickly than psychotherapy. On average, the number of psychotherapy sessions it takes to eliminate a phobia is 60. In my experience, 1 to 3 hypnosis sessions is enough with the client to be completely free of their fear and phobia.
My client has a vivid imagination. She would imagine expressions on people’s faces in public were indicating that they were about to vomit. And, according to her, she had been wrong in predicting their vomiting from their facial expressions approximately 100% of the time. So, I had her use her imagination to create feelings of comfort whenever she saw those expressions, because she knew from past experience those people were going to keep the contents of their digestive systems to themselves.
Of course, I had a lot more work to do with her. There were a number of other considerations and thoughts that she used to create the fear for herself. However, that’s a story for another time.
My client was surprised to realize how quickly she can eliminate her fear of people vomiting. It was simply a matter of using her imagination a little bit differently in a hypnotic state.
