The Surgeon General of the United States has released a report, http://tinyurl.com/ofdrzrg, that shows that smoking is deadlier than ever. Men who smoked in 1959 with three times as likely to get lung cancer as men would never smoked. Now men smoke are 26 times more likely to get lung cancer than non-smoking men.
The Surgeon General’s report also says that smoking has been shown to cause a number of diseases that have never been linked to smoking before. That includes diabetes, ectopic pregnancy, rectal dysfunction, and rheumatoid arthritis.
The reasons for the increase in the deadliness of smoking have not been determined. There’s some speculation that it may be due to chemical additives to the tobacco in cigarettes that were not there in the 1950s.
