Curiosity is one of the most powerful resources that we can bring in the play to help us lose weight. And, a hypnotherapy weight loss program can help us convert our tendency to struggle with willpower against a natural resistance to changing lifelong eating habits into curiosity. When we direct curiosity in some specific ways, we can direct the unconscious mind to open the doors to developing new slender eating habits. Of course, we need to make sure the new habits are just as natural and compelling as the fattening habits that they replace.
Fattening eating habits are held in place by powerful emotions and beliefs. A person might become attached to sweets, for example, because when they were a child whenever they got upset an adult gave them something sweet to eat. The adult only intended calming the child in the moment. It was unlikely that they realized they were teaching the child a potentially lifelong fattening stress relief strategy.
One of my clients, Joe, told me that the only way he had of celebrating was eating. He is a salesman. Recently, he had a very nice lunch, closed a big deal, and went to McDonald’s and had a cheeseburger, fries, and a shake, which made him feel way too full. That meal was unpleasant for him. Curiosity led him to develop several more satisfying alternatives for celebration.
During his hypnotherapy weight loss session, Joe was directed to get curious about activities that he enjoyed that are legal, moral, and nonfattening. He realized that although celebrations could include food, they could also include many other kinds of pleasures. For example, he can start reading a book that he’s been wanting to start, or take an afternoon off from work to go to a football game. Or, rather than taking his wife out for a big dinner to celebrate, they could book a room at a fancy hotel and spend the night away from the children just for themselves.
Had Joe simply tried to force himself through willpower to stop going out for special dinners with the family, or eating a hamburger and fries after making a big sale, he would’ve likely been unsuccessful. By using hypnosis to step outside of his normal thinking patterns, Joe could direct his imagination and curiosity to create some new new ways of celebrating. And, since he created the new options from deep within a subconscious mind, they were meaningful and compelling. This is a good example of one way in which a hypnotherapy weight loss program can use curiosity to help the client accomplish important goals.
